Faido TI

The Faido project is implementing measures to establish and maintain stable, resilient protection forests in the Leventina. The forests on the poorly developed, steep slopes above the valley floor perform an important protective function in relation to transport infrastructure and villages.

Forest and cultural landscape

Image
Faido Landschaft

The merged municipality of Faido comprises twelve villages located in the central Leventina in the valley and on the mountain slopes. One of them is Anzonico. A steep mountain forest stretches up to 2,000 meters above sea level, providing an important protective function for the infrastructure below. Above the tree line, the landscape is characterized by avalanche barriers. They extend up the Fianett flank as far as Pizzo Erra. Switzerland's most important north-south axis is located in the Leventina. The A2, the busy highway and the old railroad line that connects the north and south through the Gotthard tunnel. The closed forest above Anzonico protects the highway, train line, high-voltage power line and houses from rockfall, avalanches, landslides, mudslides and swelling torrents. It is central to life in the valley and on the populated slopes.

Idea and goals

Faido Aussicht

In the Faido project, the Bergwaldprojekt works in the forests of the Swiss Federal Railways SBB. Due to the importance of the forests, which protect the rail network from natural hazards such as rockfall, avalanches and landslides, SBB owns its own forests. These protective forests are particularly important in the area of the Gotthard railroad tunnel. The Bergwaldprojekt supports the forest owner SBB in establishing and maintaining stable protective forests to protect the important transport axes from natural hazards.

Project partnerships: The Faido project is being carried out together with the relevant SBB specialists.

What you can expect

The work is flexibly adapted to current needs as well as weather and terrain conditions and can vary. The focus of the work in the Faido project is on building footpaths and thinning the chestnut-dominated deciduous forests to promote biodiversity and combat alien problem plants. All work is carried out under the guidance of experienced project and group leaders.

The week starts on Sunday with an introduction to the Bergwaldprojekt and the week's schedule. The days start early: breakfast is served at 6:30 a.m. and then the work begins. One highlight is the weekly forestry excursion in the surrounding area. In addition to forestry work, volunteers also take on simple household tasks in the accommodation, such as tidying up or washing up.
