Carabbia TI
In the Carabbia project, volunteers experience nature-based work in a Mediterranean landscape in Ticino. They actively contribute to the protection of biodiversity and the native flora of Ticino's forests. Various neophytes such as the Chinese hemp palm and the cherry laurel are combated. This actively supports the local population in their fight for biodiversity and against neophytes.
Forest and cultural landscape
Carabbia is a small, charming village that is now part of the city of Lugano in the canton of Ticino. Picturesquely situated on the southern slope of Monte San Salvatore, Carabbia offers impressive views of Lake Lugano and the surrounding hills. The cultural landscape around Carabbia has changed significantly in recent decades. Where vineyards, chestnut groves and small-scale farming structures once dominated, settlements, leisure areas and infrastructural buildings are now spreading out. The traditional use of the landscape has declined significantly, which has also had an impact on biodiversity. The chestnut forests that surround the village and make up the largest part of the landscape are endangered. Various neophytes are spreading from the gardens of the houses and mainly the vacation homes. The Chinese hemp palm and cherry laurel in particular are encroaching on the native species in the forest and making their natural regeneration more difficult.
Idea and goals
The aim of the Carabbia project is to protect the forests surrounding the village. The spread of neophytes such as the Chinese hemp palm, the cherry laurel, the tree of heaven and other species on the edge of the village is being curbed. The plants are either felled or uprooted and the cuttings are removed from the forest and disposed of properly. The biodiversity of the forests is protected and the natural regeneration of native tree species such as sweet chestnut and oak is promoted. The project also raises awareness of the issue of invasive neophytes among the local population and encourages them to take the initiative.
Project partnerships: The project is being carried out in collaboration with the "Verde pubblico" department of the city of Lugano and its works groups.
What you can expect
The work is flexibly adapted to current needs as well as weather and terrain conditions and can vary. The focus of the work in the Carabbia project is on combating neophytes such as the Chinese hemp palm, cherry laurel and others. All work is carried out under the guidance of experienced project and group leaders.
The week starts on Sunday with an introduction to the Bergwaldprojekt and the week's schedule. The days start early: breakfast is served at 6:30 a.m. and then the work begins. One highlight is the weekly forestry excursion in the surrounding area. In addition to the forestry work, volunteers also take on simple household tasks in the accommodation, such as tidying up or washing up.
