Val Medel GR
In the Val Medel project, volunteers help to preserve protective forests, maintain Alpine cultural landscapes and thus contribute to preserving the inner Alpine mountain valley as a valuable habitat for people and the environment.
Forest and cultural landscape
The Rhaeto-Romanic-speaking Val Medel is located in the upper Surselva and stretches from Disentis to the Lukmanier Pass. The remote valley is characterized by agriculture, but farming is on the decline. in 1990, storm Vivian destroyed large areas of protective forest near Curaglia and made the village vulnerable to rockfalls and avalanches. Since then, the Bergwaldprojekt has been intensively involved in reforestation and forest conservation. Today, the landscape is characterized by mountain meadows, pastures and stable protection forests, which are essential for culture, nature and safety in the valley.
Idea and goals
The aim of the Val Medel project is to secure the protective function of the forests and maintain the cultural landscape in a sustainable manner. Following the completion of the successful "Curaglia Protection Forest" and "Ziegenalp Puzzetta" projects, the Bergwaldprojekt has been working throughout the valley since 2018, contributing to the preservation of the landscape and the creation of resilient protection forests.
Project partnerships: Since 1990, the Bergwaldprojekt has been working in Val Medel in close cooperation with the local forestry company and the municipality.
What you can expect
The work is flexibly adapted to current needs as well as weather and terrain conditions and can vary. The work in the Val Medel project focuses on the construction of wildlife protection fences, the maintenance and stabilization of protective forests and the construction and renovation of footpaths. All work is carried out under the guidance of experienced project and group leaders.
The week starts on Sunday with an introduction to the Bergwaldprojekt and the week's schedule. The days start early: breakfast is served at 6:30 a.m. and then the work begins. One highlight is the weekly forestry excursion in the surrounding area. In addition to forestry work, volunteers also take on simple household tasks in the accommodation, such as tidying up or washing up.
