Uri UR
In the Uri project, volunteers in the heart of Switzerland are committed to preserving protected forests and cultural landscapes. They maintain mountain forests that are difficult to access, support biodiversity in wild biotopes and ensure the stability of slopes, path infrastructure and pastures.
Forest and cultural landscape
The mountain canton of Uri lies between Lake Lucerne and the Gotthard Pass and has always been an important north-south transit canton. Around 60% of the forests are protective forests that protect villages, roads and the Gotthard line from rockfalls, avalanches and mudslides. The landscape is also characterized by small-scale agriculture. Flat and steep areas that are often difficult to access have been intensively farmed, mowed or grazed for centuries, often under extreme conditions.
Idea and goals
The Bergwaldprojekt in Uri has been working with local forestry companies since 1991. The aim is to protect the forests, maintain the cultural landscape and promote biodiversity in wild biotopes. Hard-to-access protection forests are stabilized through volunteer work, access routes and infrastructure are maintained and endangered habitats for animals and plants are secured.
Project partnerships: The Bergwaldprojekt works closely with local forestry companies to sustainably maintain protection forests, trails and cultural landscapes.
What you can expect
The work is flexibly adapted to current needs as well as weather and terrain conditions and can vary. The focus of the work in the Uri project is on protective forest maintenance, wild biotope maintenance, clearing, construction and maintenance of footpaths and wildlife protection fences as well as combating neophytes. All work is carried out under the guidance of experienced project and group leaders.
The week starts on Sunday with an introduction to the Bergwaldprojekt and the week's schedule. The days start early: breakfast is served at 6:30 a.m. and then the work begins. One highlight is the weekly forestry excursion in the surrounding area. In addition to forestry work, volunteers also take on simple household tasks in the accommodation, such as tidying up or washing up.
