Trient VS
In the Trient project, volunteers in the French-speaking Lower Valais are committed to the preservation of protection forests, alpine meadows and larch pastures. They maintain dry meadows, clear bushes from pastures and support the development of stable forests. In this way, they contribute to the preservation of valuable habitats, the promotion of biodiversity and the safety of settlements and infrastructure.
Forest and cultural landscape
Trient lies at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif. The Vallée du Trient has connected Martigny and Chamonix for centuries and is an important transportation axis. The steep forests protect roads, settlements and the train line from falling rocks, avalanches and landslides. In flatter areas, the landscape is characterized by small-scale agriculture: open meadows, pastures and larch forests provide a habitat for rare plant and animal species. The valley is a valuable ecological area with a high level of biodiversity.
Idea and goals
The aim is the sustainable maintenance of protection forests and cultural landscapes. A particular focus is on keeping overgrown avalanche paths open to promote the hazel grouse population and on maintaining species-rich dry meadows and pastures. These targeted measures help to preserve biodiversity and safeguard the ecological values of the region in the long term.
Project partnerships: Together with the local forestry company and the regional nature park "Vallée du Trient", the Bergwaldprojekt is committed to maintaining the protection forest and the cultural landscape in the region.
What you can expect
The work is flexibly adapted to current needs as well as weather and terrain conditions and can vary. The main tasks in the Trento project are clearing, maintaining larch willow forests and clearing and maintaining dry meadows in order to preserve rare plant and animal species such as the saw-toothed grasshopper and Aesculapian snake. All work is carried out under the guidance of experienced project and group leaders.
The week starts on Sunday with an introduction to the Bergwaldprojekt and the week's schedule. The days start early: breakfast is served at 6:30 a.m. and then the work begins. One highlight is the weekly forestry excursion in the surrounding area. In addition to forestry work, volunteers also take on simple household tasks at the accommodation, such as tidying up or washing up.
