Schaan (Matona) FL

In the Schaan (Matona) project, volunteers experience how important protective forests are for people and the environment. They work on steep terrain to maintain unstable mountain forests, build footpaths and fences and support the preservation of valuable habitats. In this way, they contribute directly to the safety of the population and the protection of the forests in the Principality of Liechtenstein.

Forest and cultural landscape

Schaan is a municipality in the Principality of Liechtenstein and lies in the Rhine Valley at the foot of the Three Sisters Massif. Above it, steep mountain flanks of marl and limestone rise upwards, characterized by unstable slopes. The forest fulfills key protective functions here: It holds back falling rocks, prevents avalanches and protects the settlements in the valley. It also stores water like a sponge and thus counteracts the risk of flooding. Last but not least, the filter function of the forest soil ensures clean drinking water for the entire country. The protective forest is therefore both a source of livelihood and security.

Idea and goals

The aim of the project is to stabilize the protection forest above Schaan in the long term and secure its diverse functions. Through targeted maintenance work, path maintenance and the construction of fences, natural regeneration is promoted and the forest's resilience to climate and usage pressure is increased.

Project partnerships: The Bergwaldprojekt works in close cooperation with the Liechtenstein Forestry Service and supports protective forest maintenance in the Matona area, which is difficult to access.

What you can expect

The work is flexibly adapted to current needs as well as weather and terrain conditions and can vary. The main work in the Schaan (Matona) project is the thinning of the protection forest, the construction and maintenance of wildlife protection fences and the creation of footpaths. All work is carried out under the guidance of experienced project and group leaders.

We start on Sunday with an introduction to the Bergwaldprojekt and the week's schedule. The days start early: breakfast is served at 6:30 a.m., after which the work begins. One highlight is the weekly forestry excursion in the surrounding area. In addition to forestry work, volunteers also take on simple household tasks in the accommodation, such as tidying up or washing up.
