Montafon (Rellstal) AT
In Rellstal, volunteers experience biodiversity up close and support the protection of valuable biotopes and the maintenance of traditional alpine pastures. In this way, they actively contribute to preserving the unique biodiversity and cultural landscape of this special natural area.
Forest and cultural landscape
The Montafon in Vorarlberg is one of the most impressive Alpine valleys in Austria - known for its mountains and high tourist significance. The Rellstal is considered one of the most unspoilt valleys in Vorarlberg. Away from the hustle and bustle of tourism, it is home to valuable raised bogs, wetlands and species-rich alpine meadows. They provide a habitat for rare animal and plant species and are also a formative cultural heritage. The sustainable management of these areas ensures biodiversity and contributes to the stability of the surrounding protection forests.
Idea and goals
The Montafon (Rellstal) project focuses on biotope maintenance: volunteers safeguard the habitat of sensitive moors and reed beds, which contribute to climate protection as important carbon reservoirs. Equally important is the maintenance of alpine meadows, which have been created through centuries of cultivation and would become overgrown without regular use.
Project partnerships: The Bergwaldprojekt works together with its Austrian forestry partners from Stand Montafon.
What you can expect
The work is flexibly adapted to current needs as well as weather and terrain conditions and can vary. The work in Rellstal focuses on clearing alpine meadows, maintaining moorland areas, clearing reed beds and building footpaths. All work is carried out under the guidance of experienced project and group leaders.
The week starts on Sunday with an introduction to the Bergwaldprojekt and the course of the week. The days start early: breakfast is served at 6:30 a.m. and then the work begins. One highlight is the weekly forestry excursion in the surrounding area. In addition to forestry work, volunteers also take on simple household tasks in the accommodation, such as tidying up or washing up.
