Jura SO
Volunteers in the Solothurn Jura are committed to maintaining species-rich forests and protection forests. Targeted interventions preserve the diverse Jura pastures and promote their unique biodiversity.
Forest and cultural landscape
The Schauenburg project site is located on the first Jura chain in the canton of Solothurn at over 1000 m above sea level and offers a wide view across the Central Plateau to the Alps on a clear day. The forests are naturally rich in beech trees and are home to many rare species of trees and shrubs. Pine forests dominate the dry southern slopes. Valuable transitional areas with species-rich forest edge structures are created between the forest and summer pastures. Around ten percent of the forest area in the canton of Solothurn is protected forest, which, in addition to its protective function, also fulfils important tasks for biodiversity, local recreation and wood use.
Idea and goals
The aim of the project is to maintain the protection forest in the Solothurn Jura, promote the ecological diversity of the forest warbler and preserve habitats of particular importance, such as the Jura pastures. The Bergwaldprojekt supports the Leberberg forestry operation in stabilizing the hardwood-rich stands in the steep slopes and implements targeted measures to promote biodiversity in the forest and on the species-rich Jura pastures. This makes the forest more resilient to climatic and ecological changes in the long term and preserves rare species.
Project partnerships:
The Leberberg forestry operation is a project partner together with local farmers and the cantonal nature conservation authority.
What you can expect
The work is flexibly adapted to current needs as well as weather and terrain conditions and can vary.
The main tasks include ecological enhancement measures in the forest, clearing and reforesting storm areas and clearing species-rich pastures.
All work is carried out under the guidance of experienced project and group leaders.
We start on Sunday with an introduction to the Bergwaldprojekt and the week's activities. The days start early: breakfast is served at 6:30 a.m., after which the work begins. One highlight is the weekly forestry excursion in the surrounding area. In addition to forestry work, volunteers also take on simple household tasks in the accommodation, such as tidying up or washing up.
