Jaun FR

In the Jaun project, volunteers are involved in maintaining and stabilizing the protection forests around the mountain village on the Jaun Pass. Forest and cultural landscape

Jaun Landschaft

Jaun lies on the pass between Simmental and Gruyère and is the only German-speaking municipality in the district of Gruyère. Surrounded by the rugged limestone mountains of the Gastlosen, the village is particularly exposed to rockfall and avalanches. The protective forest above Jaun plays a central role in the safety of settlements and traffic routes. After the major avalanche disaster of 1968, numerous protective measures were implemented. Today, the forest serves as a natural buffer that inhibits avalanches, stops rockfall and retains water during heavy rainfall.

Idea and goals

The aim of the project is to sustainably maintain and stabilize the protection forest around Jaun. Targeted care measures and maintenance work will improve the forest's resistance to natural hazards.

Project partnerships: Since 1990, the Bergwaldprojekt has been working closely with the local forestry service to strengthen the protective function of the forest and ensure the long-term safety of the population and infrastructure.

What you can expect

The work is flexibly adapted to current needs as well as weather and terrain conditions and can vary. The main activities include maintaining the young forest, building and maintaining footpaths, clearing rockfall obstructions and removing loose stones. All work is carried out under the guidance of experienced project and group leaders.

The week starts on Sunday with an introduction to the Bergwaldprojekt and the week's schedule. The days start early: breakfast is served at 6:30 a.m. and then the work begins. One highlight is the weekly forestry excursion in the surrounding area. In addition to forestry work, volunteers also take on simple household tasks in the accommodation, such as tidying up or washing up.
