Haslen GL
In the Haslen project, volunteers are committed to stabilizing the protection forest in the Kärpf wildlife reserve and preserving valuable biotopes. Through reforestation work, the maintenance of wildlife protection fences and targeted care measures, they contribute to the preservation of a diverse, resilient forest that protects settlements and infrastructure from natural hazards.
Forest and cultural landscape
The village of Haslen lies in the Grosstal valley in the canton of Glarus, surrounded by the striking peaks of the mountainous canton. As in many places in the Alps, the forest was once heavily used and overused. After the introduction of the Forest Police Act of 1876, the Schwanderberg was extensively afforested. Today, the forests are uniform and susceptible to storm and beetle damage. Storm Vivian (1990) and the subsequent bark beetle infestation weakened the stands in particular. The affected areas are located in the Kärpf game reserve, the oldest and largest in Switzerland. The high wildlife population poses particular challenges for sustainable forest management.
Idea and goals
The aim of the project is to establish and stabilize a diverse, resilient protection forest in the long term. Together with the local forestry company, the Bergwaldprojekt promotes sustainable forest development through targeted maintenance and reforestation work. One focus is on measures to prevent damage caused by game so that young trees can rejuvenate successfully despite high game densities and the forest can fulfill its protective function in the long term.
Project partnerships: The project is implemented in collaboration with the local forestry company and the canton of Glarus.
What you can expect
The work is flexibly adapted to current needs as well as weather and terrain conditions and can vary. The main tasks include maintaining the protection forest, building and maintaining footpaths, mowing and maintaining wildlife protection fences and maintaining grazing areas. All work is carried out under the guidance of experienced project and group leaders.

The days start on Sunday with an introduction to the Bergwaldprojekt and the week's schedule. The days start early: breakfast is served at 6:30 a.m. and then the work begins. One highlight is the weekly forestry excursion in the surrounding area. In addition to the forestry work, volunteers also take on simple household tasks in the accommodation, such as tidying up or washing up.
