Grindelwald BE
In the Grindelwald project, volunteers experience first-hand how important protective forests are for the safety of people and infrastructure. They actively contribute to the maintenance of species-rich forests and alpine meadows, promote biodiversity and thus safeguard the unique cultural landscape of the Bernese Oberland for future generations.
Forest and cultural landscape
Grindelwald in the Bernese Oberland is nestled between imposing mountain massifs such as the Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn and the Fiescherhörnern as well as the world-famous Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau group. This impressive landscape attracts visitors from all over the world. The valley basin is characterized by steep valley sides and is accessible by road and railroad. The protective forest plays a decisive role here: it holds back stones and water, prevents avalanches and thus ensures access and safety in the region all year round. Higher, flatter areas are characterized by species-rich alpine meadows, which have been part of the cultural landscape for centuries.
Idea and goals
The aim of the Grindelwald project is to strengthen the stability and resilience of the forests and promote the diversity of tree species. In addition, access to the forests is being improved through the construction of footpaths to enable sustainable use and maintenance. Particular attention is paid to areas with high biodiversity, which are to be protected from overgrowth. The dismantling of old barbed wire fences is also a priority in order to ensure safety for wildlife and people.
Project partnerships: The Bergwaldprojekt supports the local forestry company and the municipality of Grindelwald in the sustainable maintenance of the protection forests and alpine pastures.
What you can expect
The work is flexibly adapted to current needs as well as weather and terrain conditions and can vary. Work in the Grindelwald project includes maintenance work in the protection forest, thinning, building wildlife protection fences, building access paths and keeping alpine meadows and biotopes worthy of protection open. All work is carried out under the guidance of experienced project and group leaders.
The week starts on Sunday with an introduction to the Bergwaldprojekt and the week's schedule. The days start early: breakfast is served at 6:30 a.m. and then the work begins. One highlight is the weekly forestry excursion in the surrounding area. In addition to forestry work, volunteers also take on simple housekeeping tasks in the accommodation, such as tidying up or washing up.
