Forest and cultural landscape

The Elm GL family project takes place in the Sernftal valley in the municipality of Elm. As in many mountain regions, the forest here was heavily overused in the 19th century. Protection and intensive reforestation only began with the Swiss Federal Forest Act. Today, the 100-year-old spruce stands are dense and uniform in many places - and therefore unstable. Targeted maintenance measures are needed to ensure the protective function against rockfall and avalanches. Traditional management is declining on the less steep, open areas or forest clearings, and valuable biotopes are becoming overgrown, leading to a loss of biodiversity.

Idea and goals

The family project combines nature-based work with shared experiences. The activities are designed in such a way that children and adults can work together - without pressure to perform, but with a clear common task. The group gets to know the mountain forest habitat, gains exciting insights into its importance and experiences directly how commitment and teamwork pay off. The experience of "moving trees" together will be remembered for a long time by young and old alike.

What you can expect

The work is flexibly adapted to current needs as well as weather and terrain conditions and can vary. The work is varied and suitable for children: wildlife protection fences are built and plantings are mowed, clearings are made and forest clearings are mowed. Playful elements and short inputs on the forest ecosystem liven up the day. Several short excursions complete the program. All work is carried out under the guidance of experienced project and group leaders.
