Bregaglia Autumn GR
In the Bregaglia project, volunteers actively contribute to the preservation of stable protection forests, maintain the valuable cultural landscape and support biodiversity measures. In this way, they help to preserve the special landscape of Bregaglia and its nature, which is worth protecting, for the future.
Forest and cultural landscape
The municipality of Bregaglia stretches from Maloja to Castasegna on the Italian border. The Bergell impresses with steep mountain slopes, original villages and a rich cultural history. Mountain forests protect against avalanches and rockfall, but are highly endangered by ungulates. The silver fir in particular is threatened with extinction. Above the tree line, the landscape is characterized by mountain meadows and inaccessible Alps. The Maloja region is home to raised bogs of national importance.
Idea and goals
The aim of the project week in autumn is to preserve the raised bogs of national importance in the Maloja region. To ensure that these valuable biotopes do not become overgrown, they are maintained through regular work to keep them open. This work is carried out when the ground is frozen so that the soil, which is sensitive to trampling, is not disturbed.
Project partnerships: The Bergwaldprojekt works together with the local forestry company to secure the protection forests in Bergell in the long term.
What you can expect
The work is flexibly adapted to current needs as well as weather and terrain conditions and can vary. The work serves to keep the raised bogs of national importance open. Emerging trees are cut off. Where mechanical intervention has taken place, the remaining material is cleared from the moors. All work is carried out under the guidance of experienced project and group leaders.
The week starts on Sunday with an introduction to the Bergwaldprojekt and the week's schedule. The days start early: breakfast is served at 6:30 a.m. and then the work begins. One highlight is the weekly forestry excursion in the surrounding area. In addition to forestry work, volunteers also take on simple housekeeping tasks in the accommodation, such as tidying up or washing up.
